What is a VASP or CASP?

A VASP (Virtual Asset Service Provider) and CASP (Crypto-Asset Service Provider) refer to regulated entities that offer services related to virtual assets or cryptocurrencies. While both terms are often used interchangeably, VASP is defined by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), whereas CASP is used in the European Union’s MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets) regulation.

Examples of VASP/CASP Businesses:

  • Cryptocurrency Exchanges

  • Custodial Wallet Providers

  • OTC (Over-the-Counter) Trading Desks

  • Crypto Payment Processors

  • Liquidity Providers

  • Remittance & Cross-Border Payment Services

What a VASP or CASP Represents in Ospree?

At Ospree, a VASP or CASP represents the entity facilitating virtual asset transfers and must be indicated as part of a Travel Rule transfer record. This ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and allows proper identification of both the originator and beneficiary VASP or CASP in transactions.

In the Ospree platform (Dashboard & API), the term “VASP” is used to refer to both CASP and VASP-regulated institutions involved in Travel Rule transactions.
