# Transfer Type

<table><thead><tr><th width="205.03515625">Transfer Type</th><th>Description</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>INSTRUCTION</td><td>A travel rule transfer has a type of <code>INSTRUCTION</code> when the transfer goes through the regular travel rule process. </td></tr><tr><td>RECORD</td><td><p>A Travel Rule transfer has the type <code>RECORD</code> when any of the following conditions apply:<br></p><ul><li>The transaction is an incoming or outgoing transfer involving a self-hosted wallet.</li><li>The transaction is an incoming VASP-to-VASP deposit for which the counterparty has not initiated a Travel Rule transfer. The client creates an internal record for compliance and audit purposes, such as for a me-to-me transfer or another applicable scenario.</li></ul></td></tr></tbody></table>
